How fabric composition changes feel, breathability, shrinkage, durability, print and cost.
When you spec a custom t-shirt, the first fabric question is almost always cotton versus blend. The answer changes how the tee feels, how much it shrinks, how it holds print, and what it costs per unit. Choosing wrong means a product that looks great on the sample and disappoints the customer after ten washes.
100% cotton is what most people picture when they think of a quality tee. It is soft, breathable and takes screen print and embroidery cleanly. The tradeoffs are well known: it shrinks more, wrinkles more easily and costs more per unit as cotton prices move.
A blend mixes cotton with another fiber, most often polyester or elastane. Polyester adds durability, wrinkle resistance and helps the tee hold its shape. Elastane adds stretch and recovery. The tradeoff is a slightly less natural hand feel and, for high polyester ratios, less breathability.
| Factor | 100% Cotton | Cotton Blend |
|---|---|---|
| Hand feel | Soft, natural | Slightly less natural |
| Breathability | Better | Lower with higher polyester |
| Shrinkage | More, pre-shrunk helps | Less |
| Durability | Strong, holds color well | Stronger, wrinkle resistant |
| Print / embroidery | Takes both cleanly | Good, depends on ratio |
| Fabric cost | Higher | Often lower |
Choose 100% cotton for a premium, natural hand feel and when breathability matters, like heavyweight streetwear tees. Choose a blend when you want durability, wrinkle resistance or stretch, like performance or uniform programs. We confirm the exact composition and hand feel on a sample before bulk, so the final product matches your spec.
Do not pick a blend just because it is cheaper per unit. If your brand is built on a natural, premium feel, a high polyester blend can undercut that positioning. Choose the fiber from how the customer actually experiences the tee, not from the cost sheet alone.

It depends on the product. 100% cotton gives a natural, breathable hand feel, while a blend adds durability, wrinkle resistance or stretch.
Generally yes. We pre-shrink fabric and confirm shrinkage on a sample before bulk.
100% cotton takes screen print and high-density embroidery cleanly. Blends work well too, but the result depends on the ratio and method.
