MOQ Explained: Minimum Order Quantity for Custom Clothing

1. What MOQ actually means

MOQ is the smallest quantity a factory will produce per style and colour. It exists because fabric cutting, setup and production planning only make sense at a certain scale. A typical MOQ for custom cut-and-sew apparel is around 100-300 pieces per style and colour.

2. Why a lower MOQ costs more

A smaller order still uses the same pattern-making, cutting and setup time, so the fixed cost is spread over fewer pieces, which raises the unit price. Bigger orders also get better fabric prices and production priority.

3. How to start small

Stick to one or two styles, fewer colours and a shared blank. Many factories will let a first order start around 100 pieces per style. Use the first run to test the market, then scale up on the reorder.

4. Fabric and colour also have MOQs

Besides the garment MOQ, the fabric itself often has a minimum — usually one roll per colour. Every new colour you add increases the total. Keep the first order to a few colours to stay flexible.

5. What you can negotiate

You can usually negotiate on price at higher quantities, split shipments, or slightly lower MOQ with a surcharge. Ask about sample fees being credited back and lead time trade-offs before you commit.

6. What to send for a quote

Send your design, target quantity, colours, sizes and any reference photos. The more complete your brief, the faster and more accurate the quote — usually within 1-2 working days.
